Will we have figures of the cost of a cable from the mainland, or information about progress on this? This needs to be presented (facts, not wild guesses) so we can measure it against the other options

I note your introductionis for Hydrogen fuel cells.
That is not correct
please replace with;
DIESEL/PETROL ENGINES & GENERATORS FUEL SUBSTITUTION using HHO produced
on demand FOR GENERATOR SET + AUTOMOBILES + MARINE VESSELS.

Comment recieved on the above from G Lawrence S.I.
I agree Emec is a great facility and Orkney is an ideal location to test and promote renewable energy, it’s windy (see: http://www.orkneyjar.com/orkney/climate.htm), it has a reasonably high wave energy potential (see: http://www.emec.org.uk/EWTEC7_EMEC.pdf) and its able to offset the detrimental effects of intermittent power generation due to its connection to the UK national grid, with two power cables to the Scottish mainland and a third cable underway. Shetland is looking in the same direction (no land sheltering so wave energy potential) and expects to have a subsea cable connection by 2016 (see: http://www.oceanpowermagazine.net/2011/11/16/vattenfall-signs-mou-with-shetland-islands-for-marine-energy-development/). Although bodies such as Venture Southland see marine energy deployment 10 to 15 years away and a high risk investment before then ( see page 78: http://www.southlandnz.com/Portals/0/Documents/Business/Industry%20Profiles/Southland%20Energy%20Strategy%202011.pdf ) it could be possible for the Island to capitalise on experimental renewable technology if cable connection became a reality.

Comment received on the above
"This article was last revised in 2006 so it is somewhat out of date, it does give a good insight into the technology and its inherent problems but I was wondering if anybody could suggest something a bit more up to date? Most reputable sources seem to suggest that a workable solution is ten years away at the very least. I doubt that we could ever produce such a fuel on the Island and the logistics of tranporting such a highly compressed, volatile and low density product would be horrendous."
